Is Pinterest going to replace Google?

Currently Social Motion, my business, is conducting a scientific research about how businesses use social media. Even before the finish of the theoretical framework I allready have a view questions I would like to address. I was thinking about the future of the referal website traffic conducted from Facebook, Twitter and the star of this moment Pinterest. Pinterest allready provides me with more website traffic than Twitter even for my clients.

Google has a magnificient algoritm which provides me with relevant websites, however, since I use Pinterest, I make less use of Google. For example, when I need specific statistics about the current usage of social networks I am searching on Pinterest for infographics about social media. During the search I mostly find the content, I was looking for and I discover lots of other content which makes me hang out on Pinterest longer.

Pinterest is seen as the next social network and the social media gurus are focussing for Facebook as a competitor. However I do not think I would agree on Facebook being their main competition. I think the social aspect of Pinterest is not the most important aspect. I think the human aspect of Pinterest is what makes this social network a wonderfull search engine and which is perfectly compatible with the logaritms of Google.

The human aspect of the search results was I thought to be filled by micro jobbing web platforms. Platforms which for instance, let business pay for looking at specific pictures and providing information about them. Now, this job has been done by the users of Pinterest, collecting only relevant and great pictures and information. This totally fits in the wisdom of the crowd thinking and will form a important competitor for Google. Especially when people start recognizing that they are receiving their search results based on previous searches, their historie, their old personality. I think the Google searchers will eventually get bored with their search results and will look for a more objective way to find information since the searches are based on users. Also they will look for a more effective way to find information. Pinterest will be more succesfull than Google because scanning a picture costs us less time than scanning a text.

If this is true we should stop asking the question: “What will be the next social network?” and we should start asking the question: “What will be the ultimate search engine?” In my opinion a search engine should be objective, relevant and will provide me with a realistic view of what the world is doing. The search engine will use the wisdom of the crowd by the users which are connected (social).
